O.J. Simpson was granted parole early today (Thursday 20th July) after a group of four Nevada parole commissioners all voted for the former NFL star’s release after serving nearly nine years in prison for a 2007 armed robbery in Las Vegas.
During the robbery, O.J. Simpson and a group of men went into a hotel and casino and stole sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He claimed the memorabilia and other personal items originally belonged to him.
“The only thing I saw that was on display that wasn’t mine was some baseballs, and I made it clear to everybody those are not mine,” he said during the hearing. “All I want is my property … I wasn’t there to steal from anybody.”
70 year-old Simpson appeared remotely via video conference from the Lovelock Correctional Facility in Nevada for the hearing.
O.J. Simpson’s original sentence was up to 33 years. He will have to adhere to several conditions while on parole.
